When you are not looking something bad happens…
Well the blog was taken down by people who, quite frankly, could not give two hoots for anyone else.
Referer spammers, were spamming the referer list from the website to make sure thier site was linked from our homepage. Not so bad you might think? We it they were automatically accessing the blog – with computers designed to automate these sorts of things – so often that I could count 5-10 per second!
This meant that the database server could not cope anymore and decided to die. This incidentally defeats the their objective as then no one can read the referer links at all.
I’ve implmented some changes to the website so it gets rid of them and keeps them from bringing the site down.
